Music
Subject Leaders (2024-2025): Miss A Razaq and Miss L Smith
INTENT
At St. Mary's C of E Primary Academy we want all our children in music to:
- Learn as much as possible, so all children are fluent in the fundamentals of music.
- Ignite Curiosity by introducing children to music and participating in musical activities.
- Become confident speakers and communicators as they begin to perform and present their musical ideas.
IMPLEMENTATION
At St. Mary's, children in Reception, Key Stage 1 and Year 6 have weekly music lessons delivered by class teachers that develop key musical knowledge and skills. Children will perform, listen and compose music.
Children in Years 4 and 5 have music lessons delivered by a member of the music team from Prince Henry's Grammar school - a high achieving school that is part of our Trust.
Children in Year 3 are currently learning to play the viola with lessons from Leeds Performing Arts Services.
Children learn about the history of music, and the inter-related dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, texture, structure, timbre.
All children take part in weekly sing and praise sessions where they enjoy singing together in larger groups. Singing is also an important part of whole-school worship sessions.
Some children in Years 3 - 6 are members of the extra curricula school choir, where they learn a range of songs and singing techniques including harmony in order to develop their singing talent.
